The statampere was developed as part of the electrostatic CGS unit system in the late 19th century. It was designed to simplify electrostatic equations by making the permittivity of free space dimensionless, though it resulted in very small numerical values for practical currents.

Statamperes are obsolete in modern applications and appear only in historical scientific literature or specialized theoretical physics contexts. They've been completely replaced by SI units in all practical and educational applications.
